CODIS uses three main indexes:

  1. The Forensic Index, Offender Index and Arrestee.
  2. The Forensic Index contains DNA profiles from crime scene evidence.
  3. The Offender Index contains DNA profiles from individuals who have been convicted of various offenses defined by State and/or Federal law.

The Arrestee Index contains DNA profiles of individuals who have been arrested for various offenses defined by State and/or Federal law. Not all states have laws authorizing or requiring DNA to be collected from individuals arrested for various offenses.
